SOLA SALON STUDIOS TWIN CITIES SPOTLIGHT: Q&A WITH LAURA KALLIN
1. How did you decide to be a hairstylist?
I was going to go to college to be a child psychologist and decided to go to beauty school as a back up while attending college. I fell in love with the beauty industry and realized it was going to be my career.
2. How many years of experience do you have in the industry?
over 30 years
3. What do you most like about your career?
I love to make a difference in the way people look and feel.
4. What has been your career progression since graduating school?
I worked in my first salon for 5 years building my business and continuing my education while working in a hospital part-time. As I began in my career I made an hourly wage, progressed to commission, and then managed a salon for 8 years. In February 2002, I purchased the salon I was working for. Becoming a salon owner, and continuing as a stylist for the next 12 years, was an extremely rewarding experience and I enjoyed the growth. In 2013, I was presented with an opportunity to join Sola Salons in Woodbury Lakes. I decided not to renew my lease in my previous location in Inver Grove Heights and move my business, 65th Street Salon, to Sola Salons. I loved the fact that I could come in to a beautiful location where everything is taken care of for you. There are no build-out costs, the grounds are beautifully kept, and the owners truly care about all of their tenants. By coming to Sola Salons, and having a beautiful suite, I was able to concentrate on giving my guests the time and care they deserve.
5. Tell me about the tough decision to close your salon and downsize into Sola.
It was a tough decision to close my large 2,500 sq. foot Salon and Spa with all the bells and whistles. Downsizing and working in studio style has been adjustment, however a very positive one. Change is good and has lead to growth for me in many ways, both for my business and personally.
6. What do you like most about Sola?
I love Sola because the location is easy and convenient for guests to find, with other great shopping around us. Also, I love how everything always looks clean, beautiful, and how there is a community of other professional men and women to work with. The owners are courteous, professional, and fun too!
7. What do your clients think about your space?
My clients love the studio! They say it's so quaint and comfortable. They love my decor and the storefront windows. 8. How do you like having a double space for yourself? I love having a double studio to able to provide more services. I specialize in color, haircuts, extensions, styling, makeup, and airbrush makeup but also provide aromatherapy scalp massages, waxing, treatments, keratin and Brazilian smoothing treatments, body wraps and more.
